DR ALLAN CHAPMAN, FRAS​

Allan gained his degree from the University of Lancaster and then a DPhil in the history of science at Wadham College, Oxford. His special interests are astronomy and scientific biography.

He is an informative and entertaining public speaker, regularly has appearances on television and radio and, between 2003 and 2004, was the Visiting Professor in the History of Science at Gresham College in London. In January 1994, he delivered the Royal Society history of science Wilkins Lecture, on the subject of Edmund Halley.

Allan is also a prolific publisher and has written many books including biographies such as England’s Leonardo on Robert Hooke.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (FRAS) and a founder member and president of the Society for the History of Astronomy (SHA).

In 2004 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Central Lancashire and in 2010 an honorary doctorate from the University of Salford.

Salford Astronomical Society is ran by a committee of volunteers in their own time. They have a range of knowledge and experience.
