Salford Observatory is
operated by the Salford Astronomical Society.
Built in 1971 by the society members, it houses an Equatorially Fork Mounted
0.45m/f5.64 Newtonian Reflecting Telescope equipped with two refracting type
finder telescopes of 0.05 & 0.105m OG.
Originally housed at Jodrell Bank the telescope was offered to the societies
in the area by the late Prof. Z. Kopal, head of Manchester University Astronomical
Department, on the understanding that they could move and house it. Salford
Astronomical Society was offered land owned by Salford City Council's Education
Department and so acquired the instruments.
As well as housing the telescopes, the building is the centre for many of the
society's activities and specialist group meetings. All books and records belonging
to the society are kept here including several pieces of ancillary equipment
such as filar micrometers, spectroscope, photographic and video cameras and
computer. Public open nights are held on the FIRST Wednesday of each month and
has many visiting parties from schools, scouts and other clubs.
